The MEXT Scholarship  2023-2024 is a scholarship with full funding for international students. It’s available for undergraduate, master’s, Ph.D., and training studies for international students. The Scholarship will cover your tuition fee, monthly living expenses, accommodation, and round airfare from your country to Japan.

The government of Japan sponsors it via the Ministry of Education, culture, sports, science, and Technology (MEXT) of Japan. It’s an opportunity for awardees to study at the top Japan Universities.

However, the application time of the MEXT is announced in April yearly.  Though, the knowledge of the Japanese language and IELTS/TOEFL isn’t compulsory for the scholarship.

The MEXT  Coverage

MEXT Scholarship is a fully funded Scholarship for international students to help them study for free in Japan.  The scholarships offer the awardees the benefits below:

  • Monthly stipend allowances, a preparatory allowance at the 2023 rate
  • Education fees: Awardees get fees for the entrance Examination, tuition fees paid by MEXT
  • Traveling Expenses: They provide transportation to Japan covering the airfare travel expenses from their country to Japan. The air ticket will be Economy-class for the flight
  • MEXT provides them with residence accommodation through the Universities.


Qualification /Criteria for MEXT Scholarship

  • Required Language: English
  • Eligible countries: Every Country in the world
  • Every applicant with Japanese nationality isn’t eligible
  • Every undergraduate applicant must be from 17 years and under 25 years of age. However, it must have completed 12 years of school education or have completed courses in a school that’s comparable to a high school(this also includes prospective graduates).
  • For the master’s students, you must be under 35 years of age and also a graduate of a college or teacher training college. However, you must have at least five years of active experience as a teacher in a primary, secondary, or teacher training college in any of your countries.
  • For every Japanese student, applicants must be from 18 to 30 years old. Also, applicants must be enrolled as undergraduate students in faculties or schools as major in Japanese language or Japanese cultures in a University outside Japan when they come to Japan and should enroll in the home institution at the time when they return to their home countries.
Steps to Apply for MEXT Scholarships 2023

To apply, just follow the instructions to apply for the MEXT Scholarship:

  1. Locate the Japanese Embassy or consulate or your country
  2. Go to the website of the Japanese Embassy of your country. Then, under the education/Scholarship tab, you’ll see the MEXT scholarship.
  3. You’ll download the MEXT application form and fill it
  4. Proceed to submit the required documentation to the Japanese Embassy of your country
  5. Thereafter, a written test will be conducted by the Japanese Embassy of Your country.
  6. After the interview, successful candidates will be informed via email or the embassy website.
The important documents for MEXT Scholarship

  2. Your highest degree must be verified with official stamps
  • The Bachelor’s program applicants must have 12 years of Education
  • The Ph.D. applicants must have a Master’s degree to pursue this application.

NB: However, if the degree isn’t in English, you’ll provide the notarized copy of a translation in English is required.


  1. Provide the highest degree transcript verified with official stamps (Also, provide the grading systems as well).
  • Bachelors program applicants must be up to 12 years
  • Masters program applicants must have bachelor’s degree transcripts
  • D program applicants must have their Masters’s Degree transcripts.

NB: If your diploma isn’t in English, you’ll provide a notarized copy of the translation in English.

  1. Provide 2 recommendation letters that must be written by the applicant’s teachers/employers/teachers ( they must evaluate your academic performance and research potential) in English.
  2. Provide your passport scan
  3. Your curriculum vitae for students’ research.
  4. Photographs
  5. Provide your study plan and statement of purpose. Your plan should be in English. The primary content will include motivation of application, education/research background, and prospective study at the APU (for research students).
  6. Provide your English proficiency document: Every student whose language isn’t English can submit a proficiency certificate from their Home University and also exempted from Language tests.
  7. Tender your academic thesis or the relevant publication (for research students).
  8. Provide other reference documents if available.
